This is an opportunity to see around 500 exquisite miniature paintings and sculptures by some of our finest contemporary artists. This exhibition, held annually in the Town Hall in the centre of Wells, is a favourite with many and is greatly enjoyed by those who visit it, whether they be summer visitors who are delighted by such a unique collection of fine works of art, or regular visitors from both home and abroad. Works, amongst which are portraits, landscapes, wildlife, still life, botanical paintings and sculpture, are in many different media and styles.

There will be free teaching sessions and demonstrations throughout the week

Lacquer miniature from MstioraLacquer miniature from PalekhEXHIBITION OF FINE RUSSIAN LACQUER MINIATURE WORK

This year sees the return of the extremely popular Russian lacquer boxes. These boxes are hand painted and depict Russian fairy tales in glowing colours, many adorned with real gold leaf paint, using the techniques and materials of the icon masters of the 15th and 16th centuries.

About 40 boxes will be on sale, including top quality boxes by master artists from the villages of Kholui, Fedoskino, Mstiora and Palekh.

THE HILLIARD SOCIETY OF MINIATURISTS


was founded in 1981 by miniaturist Rosalind Pierson and Sue Burton. Beginning with 20 founder Members the Society now has over 200 Artist and non-painting Friend Members from both here and abroad.

All members enjoy the twice-yearly Newsletter, keeping them in touch with each other, other societies worldwide and with "miniature news" in general.

After a sojourn in France as a very young man, he returned to England and became, at the age of 23, the official portrait miniaturist to the Court of Queen Elizabeth the First.

Bus: National Express runs a coach service from London Victoria Coach Station to Wells. the journey takes about 3.5-4 hours.
